She’s a selfish brat who has no reason to want to kill herself but she decides to anyway because she’s bored. Literally, Veronika has nothing to complain about. Veronika just doesn’t want to be alive anymore because she thinks she’s reached her prime and after this (she’s twenty-four, by the way), her life is only going to get worse and she can’t possibly be around to watch herself become unhappy. She isn’t upset about anything, she hasn’t gone through any violent or traumatic ordeal and she isn’t sick and dying of some terminal illness. The book centres around a young woman who is just done with life. For those of you who’d like to hear the actually really good song that brought this book to my attention… 6/10/2023 0 Comments Pray for silence by linda castilloNo, this is a gritty thriller with sex in it. This is not tender realizations about feelings while wearing a bonnet (sorry, kapp). Be warned, this is not a typical Amish romance/mystery. There's a large Amish community there, and Kate was raised Amish herself before leaving the faith. The series centers around Kate Burkholder, the chief of police in a small town called Painters Mill. The thing I loved about this book was that it stood out from the rest of the genre and it featured a unique heroine. I read this book and the sequel, Pray for Silence, back to back. A day later she called me, letting me know she was behind on everything because she'd finished Sworn to Silence then immediately downloaded the next three books in the series and read them. I purchased a copy of this book for my mom when I bought my copy. It was so deliciously good that I had to review it though. Full disclosure: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo isn't so much a romantic suspense as it is a thriller with a romantic subplot. His best friend is a bit of a clown who didn’t try very hard at school so winds up in a community college. Her best friend is a manic pixie dream girl, who even comes with a quirk – this time it’s picking out one word from the dictionary that she has to get into conversation. You’ve got the mismatched couple: he’s a jock and she’s super organised and a little nerdy. Unfortunately, it was full of stock characters. And although it had a few gems, overall the story was pretty generic and much like the million teen rom-coms I’ve seen before. The basic premise is that Aidan and Clare are just about to go off to university (literally they’re one day away) and they’re trying to decide whether or not to break up. So, I picked up Hello, Goodbye, And Everything In Between, because all I’ve been doing recently is watching Pretty Little Liars (we’re on season 3, if you’re interested and Spoby is life.) At 248 pages I was confident I could finish it in one sitting, and I did! Which hopefully makes up for the fact I haven’t finished a book in over a week. Prone to daydreaming, Esch is obsessed with Greek myths and uses them to make sense of her world, obsessively comparing herself to the sorceress Medea. She is athletic and in touch with her own body, but only to the extent that it is non-feminine as she witnesses her body becoming more anatomically feminine, she attempts to distance herself from it. Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith? In Fools, Frauds and Firebrands Scruton asks, What does the Left look like today, and how has it evolved? He charts the transfer of grievances, from the working class to women, gays, and immigrants, asks what we can put in the place of radical egalitarianism, and what explains the continued dominance of antinomian attitudes in the intellectual world. In addition to assessments of these thinkers’ philosophical and political contributions, the book contains a biographical and bibliographical section summarizing their careers and most important writings. Laing, Jurgen Habermas, Gyorgy Lukacs, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Žižek, Ralph Milliband, and Eric Hobsbawm. Writing with great clarity, Scruton delivers a devastating critique of modern left-wing thinking.īeginning with a ruthless analysis of New Leftism and concluding with a critique of the key strands in its thinking, Roger Scruton conducts a reappraisal of such major left-wing thinkers as E. From one of the leading critics of leftist orientations, Roger Scruton, comes a study of the thinkers who have most influenced the attitudes of the New Left. He did it with a hatchet to the back of the neck, or with ropes around it. One young Congolese officer, with whom Stearns grew friendly, broke down after two years of interviews and admitted he’d been part of a death squad that murdered up to 100 civilians a day. The resulting book, “ Dancing in the Glory of Monsters,” is a tour de force, though not for the squeamish. He has tracked down and interviewed a rogue’s gallery of them. One of Congo’s most intrepid observers, he describes the war from the point of view of its perpetrators. Yet on their own, they do not allow us to make sense of this most confusing of wars. Their stories beg to be recorded before they are lost. Most died more slowly, of war-induced hunger and disease. Some were murdered with clubs, knives or farm tools. Perhaps 5 million have died in this central African inferno, though that is a guess - no one is counting the corpses. Most books about Congo’s war focus, understandably, on the victims. 6/8/2023 0 Comments Small Steps by Peg KehretAfter a few days, she is allowed to move out of isolation but all of the things in her room are burned because they may contain the virus.
