There is no room for nostalgia in Irvin’s version, only a melancholic and bitter realisation that something is rotten in the state of good old Blighty. How different from the more slick approach of Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 movie adaptation that, in comparison, seems seeped in period nostalgia. Albion is in the grips of austerity and an unavoidable sombreness haunts every frame. It’s almost as if the city hasn’t recovered from the bombing during WWII and all the windows are still blacked out. Seventies London is literally a dark place here. The lament for the loss of empire hangs heavy in John Irvin’s six-part adaptation of John le Carré’s classic spy novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. ![]() Terence Rigby and Alec Guinnes in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979). ![]()

6/12/2023 0 Comments Bruce rosenblum physics![]() ![]() Interpreting what it all means, however, is controversial. Quantum Enigma's description of the experimental quantum facts, and the quantum theory explaining them, is undisputed. Because the authors open the closet and examine the skeleton, theirs is a controversial book. Physics' encounter with consciousness is its skeleton in the closet. They present the quantum mystery honestly, with an emphasis on what is and what is not speculation. Authors Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner explain all of this in non-technical terms with help from some fanciful stories and bits about the theory's developers. ![]() Einstein derided the theory's "spooky interactions." With Bell's Theorem, we now know Schrodinger's superpositions and Einstein's spooky interactions indeed exist. Schrodinger showed that it "absurdly" allowed a cat to be in a "superposition" simultaneously dead and alive. Quantum Enigma explores what that implies and why some founders of the theory became the foremost objectors to it. Trying to understand the atom, physicists built quantum mechanics and found, to their embarrassment, that their theory intimately connects consciousness with the physical world. Can you believe that physical reality is created by our observation of it? Physicists were forced to this conclusion, the quantum enigma, by what they observed in their laboratories. The most successful theory in all of science-and the basis of one third of our economy-says the strangest things about the world and about us. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Maribeth boelts![]() ![]() Hilarious story of a little girl is told NOT to eat the cake her mother just made. Gender Equality in Children's Books. While it's just one kid, over and over my Star Wars, gun loving seven-year old son surprises me by his willingness to read stories with girls as the main characters, without being cajoled or even encouraged. And when I say "girls," don't automatically assume that boys will not want to read these books, as some of you (myself included) are wont to do. ![]() |
